Zandra de Araujo

Dr. Zandra de Araujo is the PI of the Flipped Mathematics Study. She is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. Dr. de Araujo received her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia. She is a former public high school mathematics teacher and she currently teaches courses for elementary and secondary preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and graduate students. Her research centers on mathematics education of English language learners and teachers’ use of mathematics curriculum. Dr. de Araujo also served as a co-PI on the NSF-Funded Quality Elementary Science Teaching (QuEST) grant that examined practicum-based professional development for elementary teachers.

Samuel Otten

Dr. Samuel Otten is a Co-PI of the Flipped Mathematics Study. He is an Assistant Professor and Lois Knowles Faculty Fellow of Mathematics Education in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. Dr. Otten received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Michigan State University. He teaches in the undergraduate teacher preparation programs and is also the director of the Master’s program. His research centers on students’ participation in mathematical practices at the secondary level, with a focus on classroom discourse and instructional technology. Dr. Otten also serves as the host of the Math Ed Podcast (www.mathedpodcast.com).

Technology is a great tool but teaching is done by a teacher.

Ze

Ze Wang

Dr. Ze Wang is a Co-PI of the Flipped Mathematics Study. She is an Associate Professor of Statistics, Measurement, and Evaluation in Education in the Department of Educational, School and Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri. Dr. Wang received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Statistics and Measurement from the University of Missouri. She teaches quantitative methods courses for graduate and undergraduate students. Her research integrates substantive theories and advanced quantitative methods to understand student learning processes and outcomes. Her research interests include statistical modeling using large-scale educational assessment data, scale development, measurement invariance,  and program evaluation. Dr. Wang also serves as the statistician and evaluator on an NSF-Funded project NRT-IGE: A Test Bed for STEM Graduate Student Communication Training that focuses on training scientists for effective communication.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Tarr

James Tarr

Dr. James Tarr is a Co-PI of the Flipped Mathematics Study. He is Dean of the College of Education at Saginaw Valley State University in MI. He was a Professor of Mathematics Education and Chair of the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. Dr. Tarr received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Illinois State University. He is a former high school mathematics teacher and he currently teaches courses for graduate students. His research centers on evaluation of curricular effectiveness and development of statistical and probabilistic reasoning. Dr. Tarr also serves as co-PI on the NSF-Funded STEAM project that investigates the impact of student mathematics learning outcomes of Elementary Mathematics Specialists in self-contained or departmentalized teaching assignments.

Ruby

Ruby Ellis

Dr. Ruby Ellis is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. Dr. Ellis received her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Auburn University. She has a variety of teaching experiences, ranging from middle and high school mathematics to an adjunct instructor in the Department of Science and Mathematics at Talladega College and a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University. Her research interests include mathematical action technology integration, teacher pedagogical beliefs and practices, and professional development.

Courtney Vahle

Courtney Vahle is a second-year doctoral student in the Mathematics Education program in the Department of Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum at the University of Missouri. Courtney received her B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She has been with the Flipped Mathematics Study for one year as a GRA.

Milan Sherman

Dr. Milan Sherman is a collaborator of the Flipped Mathematics Study. He is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Drake University. Dr. Sherman received his Ed.D. in Mathematics Education at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011. He is a former high school mathematics teacher, and currently teaches mathematics education courses for undergraduates and graduate students, and undergraduate mathematics courses. His research interests are in the use of technology for the teaching and learning of mathematics, the analysis of secondary curricula in supporting students’ learning opportunities, and the teaching and learning of school algebra.

Salih Birisci

Dr. Salih Birisci is a collaborator of the Flipped Mathematics Study. He is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Artvin Coruh University. Dr. Birisci received his Ph.D. in Secondary School Mathematics Education at the Blacksea Technical University in Turkey. He currently teaches courses for elementary and secondary preservice teachers. His research centers on e-learning, and technology-based active learning.
